FAQ's

Does mouth wash help?

Yes, mouthwash can help kill bacteria and freshen breath, but it's not a substitute for regular brushing and flossing. Rinsing with mouthwash can be a good addition to your oral hygiene routine.

But be careful of Mouthwashes containing alcohol. They can cause dry mouth, irritation, and a burning sensation for some people. It can also disrupt the natural balance of oral bacteria, potentially leading to bad breath. If you experience these side effects, consider using an alcohol-free mouthwash, which might be gentler while still providing oral hygiene and call me for consultation.

What causes bad breath and how can it be prevented?

Bad breath, or halitosis, can be caused by various factors, including:

  1. Poor Oral Hygiene: Bacteria in the mouth break down food particles and produce foul-smelling gases.
  2. Gum Disease: Infections in the gums can produce odors.
  3. Dry Mouth: Saliva helps cleanse the mouth, so a dry mouth can lead to bad breath.
  4. Diet: Foods like garlic and onions contribute to bad breath.
  5. Smoking and Tobacco Use: These products can dry out the mouth and leave a distinct odor.
  6. Medical Conditions: Certain illnesses and medications can cause bad breath.

To prevent bad breath:

  1. Maintain Good Oral Hygiene: Brush your teeth at least twice a day and floss daily to remove food particles and bacteria.
  2. Clean Your Tongue: Use a tongue scraper to remove bacteria from your tongue's surface.
  3. Regular Dental Check-ups: Visit your dentist regularly for cleanings and check-ups.
  4. Stay Hydrated: Drink plenty of water to keep your mouth moist.
  5. Chew Sugarless Gum: Chewing gum stimulates saliva production, which helps wash away bacteria.
  6. Limit Odorous Foods: Reduce your intake of garlic, onions, and spicy foods.
  7. Quit Smoking: If you smoke, consider quitting to improve your oral health and overall well-being.

If bad breath persists despite these measures, come see me.

Can I  get Regular dental cleanings vs Deep dental cleanings?

No. you can NOT receive regular dental cleanings vs Deep cleanings, since they serve different purposes and are recommended for different oral health needs:

  1. **Regular Dental Cleaning (Prophylaxis):** This is the routine cleaning you receive during your regular dental check-ups, typically every six months. It involves removing plaque, tartar, and stains from the teeth. Regular cleanings help maintain good oral health, prevent cavities, and keep your gums healthy. They are suitable for individuals with healthy gums who do not have significant buildup of tartar or signs of gum disease.
  2. **Deep Cleaning (Scaling and Root Planing):** Deep cleaning is a more extensive procedure usually recommended for individuals with gum disease (periodontal disease). It involves scaling, which is the removal of tartar and bacteria from the tooth surfaces and beneath the gums, and root planing, which smoothens the tooth roots to remove bacterial toxins. Deep cleaning helps treat gum disease by removing the source of infection and promoting healing of the gums. It is typically performed when there are signs of periodontal pockets, gum inflammation, or bone loss.

It's essential to follow the recommendations to maintain optimal oral health and prevent gum disease progression.

Regular dental cleanings are essential for prevention, while deep cleanings are a treatment for existing gum disease.

Make sure to be on 3 month Perio recall after the deep cleanings to keep healthy and infection free mouth.

Have any questions call me or my team to discuss.

Can I reverse a tooth cavity by proper oral hygiene?

Unfortunately No. we can not reverse dental cavity (a hole in the tooth), by oral care alone. I have to remove the decayed portion of the tooth and fill the cavity to prevent further damage.

Regular dental check-ups can catch demineralization early when it's still reversible, making prevention and early intervention key to maintaining good oral health.

So it’s best to be proactive than reactive.

Let me know if you have any questions.

Is it normal for my gums to bleed while I brush my teeth?

No, it is not normal for your gums to bleed while brushing your teeth. Bleeding gums can be a sign of gum disease, gingivitis being the most common form. Gingivitis is caused by plaque buildup around the gumline, leading to inflammation and bleeding.

Other possible causes of bleeding gums include brushing too hard, using a toothbrush with hard bristles, hormonal changes (such as during pregnancy or menstruation), vitamin deficiencies (especially vitamin C), or certain medical conditions and medications.

If your gums bleed consistently while brushing, it's important to schedule an appointment with me. So I  can evaluate your oral health, determine the cause of the bleeding, and recommend appropriate treatment or changes in your oral hygiene routine. Ignoring bleeding gums can lead to more severe forms of gum disease and potential tooth loss, so it's crucial to address this issue promptly.

Is Teeth whitening safe?

Yes, teeth whitening is generally safe when performed under the supervision of a dental professional. Few things to do before whitening your teeth.

  1. **Consultation with Me ** Before undergoing any teeth whitening procedure, it's advisable to consult me. So I can evaluate your oral health and recommend the most suitable whitening method for you. Some individuals may have underlying dental conditions that could be affected by teeth whitening treatments.
  2. **Professional Supervision:** In-office teeth whitening procedures conducted by us are considered safe and effective. We can use stronger whitening agents and employ techniques to protect your gums and tooth enamel during the process.
  3. **Over-the-Counter Products:** There are numerous over-the-counter teeth whitening products, such as whitening strips, gels, and toothpaste. When used as directed, these products are generally safe. However, excessive or improper use can lead to tooth sensitivity and gum irritation.Overuse or misuse of over the counter whitening products can harm your teeth and gums.
  4. **Potential Side Effects:** Some people may experience tooth sensitivity or gum irritation after teeth whitening. These side effects are usually temporary and can be managed. If you experience persistent discomfort, it's important to contact your dentist.

Remember, teeth whitening is not permanent, and results can vary based on individual factors such as the extent of staining and the type of whitening procedure used. It's also worth noting that certain stains, such as those caused by antibiotics or injury, may not respond well to teeth whitening treatments. Always consult with a Me to determine the best and safest approach for your specific situation.

How to Prevent or Get Rid of Red Wine Stains on Your Teeth?

To prevent or get rid of red wine stains on your teeth, you can:

  1. **Rinse your mouth:** Swish water in your mouth immediately after consuming red wine to wash away the pigments and acids.
  2. **Chew sugarless gum:** Chewing gum stimulates saliva production, which can help neutralize acids and wash away stains.
  3. **Use a straw:** Drinking red wine through a straw can minimize its contact with your teeth.
  4. **Eat cheese:** Cheese is rich in calcium, which can help create a protective layer on your teeth, reducing the impact of stains.
  5. **Brush your teeth:** Brush your teeth before and after consuming red wine.
  6. **Limit consumption:** If possible, limit your intake of red wine to reduce the chances of staining your teeth.
  7. **Regular dental cleanings:** Visit me for regular cleanings and professional teeth whitening treatments to remove stubborn stains.
  8. In office teeth GLO whitening is better than at home or over the counter teeth whitening.

Remember, it's best to enjoy red wine in moderation and be proactive in your oral hygiene routine to prevent or minimize stains.
